Volktek is a leader in the development of high-quality networking systems. Ethernet Ring Protection Switching (ERPS) ensures that Ethernet networks run quickly and reliably. It can switch paths in less than 50 milliseconds if a problem arises, eliminating loops and ensuring the network functions smoothly.

What is ERPS?
ERPS is a technology defined by the ITU-T G.8032 standard. Its goal is to make Ethernet networks more reliable and stable. Extreme Networks created ERPS, which was later upgraded in accordance with ITU-T requirements. Even if there are faults, ERPS ensures that the
 network continues to run properly.

ERPS's key features include:

  1. Sub-50ms protection switching: which minimizes downtime by instantly switching traffic pathways if a link breaks.
  2. Loop Avoidance: Prevents loops in the network, ensuring its stability.
  3. Wide-Area Multipoint Connectivity: Lowers infrastructure expenses by requiring fewer connections.

How ERPS Work?
In an ERPS network, each node (a device or switch) is connected to its neighbors by two independent links, forming a ring. A minimum of three nodes are required. Here's how it works:

  • Loop Avoidance: Traffic can flow on all links except one, known as the Ring Protection Link (RPL). The RPL is typically blocked by the RPL Owner Node to prevent looping.
  • Failure Handling: If there is a failure, the RPL Owner Node unblocks the RPL, allowing traffic to reroute over the previously blocked link and ensuring uninterrupted service.

Advanced Features of G.8032v2.
The second edition of G.8032 includes various enhancements, including:

1. Supports multi-ring/ladder networks, allowing for more complicated network topologies.
2. Revertive/Non-Revertive Modes: Provides flexibility in how networks recover after failure.
3. Administrative Commands: Supports Forced Switch (FS) and Manual Switch (MS) for exact control.
4. Optimized FDB Flush Logic: Minimizes needless database flush operations.
5. Many ERP Instances: Allows for many instances on a single ring for increased scalability.

How ERPS Work?

During normal operation, the RPL Owner Node inhibits the RPL to prevent loops.

  • Failure Detection: When adjacent nodes detect a link failure, they transmit R-APS (SF) signals, which block the affected ports.
  • Traffic Rerouting: The RPL Owner Node unblocks the RPL, allowing traffic to bypass the fault.
  • Recovery: After the failure is addressed, neighboring nodes send R-APS (NR) messages. The RPL Owner Node then re-blocks the RPL and instructs the other nodes to unblock their ports, resuming normal operations.
